May we purchase any food from you?
We have nothing to give you; my husband has gone out in search of food.
During the Hijrah journey to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr RA came to the tent of Umm Ma'bad, an elderly Bedouin woman, near Qadid. She did not know who they were. They asked if they could buy some food. She told them she had nothing to give, and that her husband was out looking for food himself.
The Prophet ﷺ saw an old goat in the corner of the tent, too old to give milk. He asked her permission to milk it. She said its milking days were long gone, but when he asked again, she agreed. He made du'a, mentioned the name of Allah and moved his hand under the goat's udder, and it filled with milk. Abu Bakr RA milked it, and the two of them drank their fill. They left the rest for Umm Ma'bad and her husband.
When her husband came back, he was astonished to find the milk. Umm Ma'bad told him about the two travelers and described them. He said they must be the two men the Quraysh were hunting, one of whom claimed to be a prophet. She realized he must truly be a prophet, and the couple accepted Islam.
Umm Ma'bad is one of the few female Companions (sahabiyyat) who described the Prophet ﷺ's physical appearance, including his height, his hair and his features.
