As more people converted, Makkan society began to split apart, and the Quraysh tried to negotiate directly with the Prophet ﷺ. They proposed a compromise. One day all of them would worship Allah as Muslims, and the next day all of them would worship the idols together. Allah revealed Surah al-Kafirun (Qur'an 109:1-6) in response, rejecting any compromise in tawhid, the worship of Allah alone.
There is no middle ground in tawhid.
