The Quraysh could not answer the Qur'an itself, so they turned to slander. They accused the Prophet ﷺ of being mad (Qur'an 68:51) and of being a soothsayer (Qur'an 69:42). They called him a magician, or a man under a spell (Qur'an 15:15, 51:52 and 17:47), and they called him a poet (Qur'an 36:69). The Qur'an answered each charge. To the charge of madness, it replied that he had lived a whole lifetime among them, so they knew him well (Qur'an 10:16). To the charge of poetry, Allah said that He had not taught him poetry, and that poetry was not fitting for him. Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ hardly ever recited poetry in his whole life. One scholar said he never recited even a full couplet of verse.
These same handful of accusations recur, essentially unchanged, among those who reject the Prophet ﷺ to this day.
