O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what is allowed to show of our awrah, and what is not allowed to show?
Cover your awrah from everyone other than your spouse.
What if I am alone?
There is more right upon Allah that you be shy of Him.
Muawiyah ibn Haydah RA came from Yemen as one of the delegates to the Prophet ﷺ, and he saw him only this once in his life. He asked the Prophet ﷺ which parts of the awrah, the parts of the body that must be kept covered, may be shown and which may not. The Prophet ﷺ told him to cover his awrah from everyone but his spouse. Muawiyah RA then asked what to do when he was alone. The Prophet ﷺ replied that Allah has more right that one be shy of Him. This is the only hadith that speaks explicitly about the awrah.
