The Prophet ﷺ led around 150 to 200 sahaba out to intercept the most important caravan of the Quraysh, their large annual caravan to Syria. It had at least 70 to 80 camels and carried around 70 to 80 percent of the wealth of Makkah, because almost everyone in the city who had money invested in it. It was led by Abu Sufyan ibn Harb.
By the decree of Allah, the two sides never met. A man from the caravan happened to stray and saw the Muslims coming in the distance. He rushed back to warn the others, and Abu Sufyan quickly took the caravan along a different route. The caravan reached Syria safely, and the Muslims returned to Madinah.
Outcome: The caravan was missed; no battle occurred.
This was the first stage in the lead-up to the Major Battle of Badr. Badr al-Kubra would involve this same caravan on its return journey to Makkah.
