When we came to Madinah, the salahs were placed as you know them; and the two rak'at were kept for the traveler.
~Sometime in the early Madani period, exact timing unknown · 1 AH
The five daily prayers were given during al-Isra wal-Mi'raj, the Night Journey and Ascension, and at first every prayer was two rak'ahs (units of prayer). At some point early in the Madinan period, the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions began praying the pattern known today. This is two rak'ahs for Fajr, four for Dhuhr, four for Asr, three for Maghrib and four for Isha. The shorter two-rak'ah form was kept for the traveller. The sunan and nawafil, the extra voluntary prayers, were added after this.
Reported by Aisha RA in Sahih Bukhari: "When we came to Madinah, the salahs were placed as you know them; and the two rak'at were kept for the traveler."
