What happened

After their defeat at Hunayn, the pagan tribes scattered in many directions. The tribe of Thaqif fled back to their fortified city of Ta'if. What was perhaps the second-largest group fled to a place called Awtas. Another battle was fought there, with some Muslim casualties, but the Muslims won.

Significance

Awtas was one of several smaller battles that followed Hunayn. The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions to pursue the scattered Thaqif and Hawazin, because a force of 20,000 would gather again if left alone.
