Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi' was the husband of Zaynab, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ. Zaynab was a Muslim, but Abu al-As was not, and he had been taken prisoner at Badr. He was freed on condition that he send Zaynab back to her father. About a month after Badr, the Prophet ﷺ sent two companions to wait outside Makkah to receive her.
Rumors spread in Makkah that Zaynab was about to leave. Hind bint Utbah, the wife of Abu Sufyan, visited her and offered to help her pack. Hind hoped to keep the Prophet ﷺ's daughter in Makkah as a hostage. Zaynab sensed that something was wrong and did not tell her of her plans.
Zaynab's brother-in-law, Kinana, then led her out of Makkah on a camel in broad daylight. The news spread, and a party of the Quraysh caught up with them. One of them, Habbar ibn al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib, thrust a spear at the camel. The camel reared, and Zaynab, who was pregnant, fell about 15 feet to the ground and miscarried.
Kinana stood over her and threatened anyone who came near with his sword and his bow. The standoff lasted until Abu Sufyan ibn Harb arrived and calmed the situation. He told Kinana he had acted foolishly by taking her out so openly, and told him to wait a while and then take her quietly. A few days later, Kinana took her out in the middle of the night and handed her over to the two companions sent by the Prophet ﷺ. They brought her safely to Madinah.
